Hair Extensions and Hair Thickening: Which Method Suits My Hair?
The question we are asked most often in the chair is not "what does it cost". It is: "can my hair actually take this?" That is a fair question, and the honest answer depends on which method we choose and how much of your own hair you bring with you. Because extensions are not simply extensions. We keep four different techniques in the drawer, and the wrong one really can overload fine hair.
This article explains how the methods differ, which hair we recommend each one for, and how to tell whether somebody is selling you something that will not do you any good.
Lengthening or thickening? Two different goals
The first thing we settle in a consultation is also the thing most clients underestimate.
Hair extensions are about length. We work in strands that are considerably longer than your own hair, and the transition has to be cut so that it does not look like a step. That takes material distributed across the whole head, and the effort is accordingly greater.
Hair thickening leaves the length exactly as it is. We simply bring more hair into the length you already have, so the roots look fuller, the ponytail is thicker and the ends no longer taper away. This is what clients ask for when their hair is naturally fine, after a pregnancy, or when it has thinned over the years.
The practical difference is quantity. Thickening needs noticeably fewer strands than lengthening, often sits only across the top and sides, and is therefore the quicker and less expensive of the two treatments. So anyone who assumes extensions are simply unaffordable usually has lengthening in mind rather than thickening.
The four methods compared
Keratin bondings
With bondings, each strand is attached individually to your own hair with a keratin bond. Keratin is the same substance your hair is made of, and the bond is closed with ultrasound rather than heat. The attachment point is tiny and cannot be felt.
Bondings are the longest-lasting option. Cared for well, they stay in the hair for up to six months. Fitting them takes the longest, because every single strand is placed by hand. We recommend them when you want genuine length and intend to wear the result for a long time.
Tapes
Tapes are very fine adhesive strips, placed on either side of a thin section of your own hair in a sandwich technique. Because the bond is flat, it adds almost no bulk and stays invisible even in fine hair.
They go in within about an hour, sit for roughly eight weeks and are then repositioned rather than replaced. For fine hair, tapes are our most frequent recommendation, because the weight is spread across a wide surface instead of pulling at a single point.
Weft
With a weft, the hair hangs from one continuous band that is attached as a whole, rather than consisting of many separate strands. A single length therefore covers a wide area, which makes the treatment fast and distributes the weight particularly evenly.
Wefts are the most efficient way to create fullness. For thickening alone they are often the most sensible choice, and with us they are also the most affordable.
Microcapsules
Microcapsules join the strand to your own hair with a very small capsule at the root. The method works more finely than classic rings and suits you if you want an especially discreet attachment point.
What matters here is an honest assessment of your hair density: if your own hair is very fine, bonds built this way can show through. We check that beforehand, and if it does not suit you, we say so.
How long does each one last?
- Keratin bondings: up to six months in the hair, several hours to fit.
- Tapes: around eight weeks, then repositioned. About one hour to fit.
- Weft: several weeks to months, around two hours to fit.
- Microcapsules: several months, around three hours to fit.
Every method needs a maintenance appointment once your own hair has grown. That is not a flaw but part of the treatment: the attachment point travels down as the hair grows and has to be moved back up to the root.
Why we work with Great Lengths, but not exclusively
Great Lengths is the brand our salon is certified for. It uses human hair in Remy quality, meaning the cuticle is intact and every hair points in the same direction of growth. That is what decides whether extensions are still smooth after three months or whether they matt.
That does not mean Great Lengths is the right answer for every client. Anyone who only wants thickening is often better served by a weft, and anyone who wants to try the result first is better advised to start with tapes than with an elaborate bonded installation. We advise according to your hair and what you want, not according to a label. The brand is a quality promise about the material, not a decision made in advance about the method.
Prices in our salon
- Weft extensions, lengthening and thickening: € 250
- Extensions with Great Lengths, weft, tapes, bondings: € 300
- Extensions with microcapsules: € 350
- Refreshing bondings, weft and tapes: € 150
The final price always depends on the quantity of hair, the length you want and the shape of your head. That is why we name a firm figure in the consultation and not before. What you will always be told, though, is the maintenance price: extensions are an ongoing treatment, and anyone who budgets only for the first appointment has budgeted short.
How to recognise good advice
We regularly turn clients down, or advise less hair than they had pictured. That is not bad business; it is the reason the result holds.
Look for three things, wherever you have the treatment done:
- Your own hair is looked at and touched before any method is discussed. Anyone recommending a technique without having checked the density at your roots is not recommending it to you, but to everyone.
- Colour and texture are matched against your hair, not against a catalogue. Extensions are not given away by their length but by a tone that sits wrong.
- The maintenance appointment is raised unprompted. Anyone selling only the first appointment has not thought the treatment through to the end.
If the hair has already been bleached or chemically treated, a fourth point applies: damaged hair carries less, and then the gentler method is the right one, even if the other would last longer.
An appointment at PANFILI Beauty Lounge
We work in the first district and take time over the consultation before we place the first strand. You will learn which method suits your hair, how long it lasts, what it costs and what care it asks of you. Everything else about the treatment is on our page for hair extensions, and the full hair menu at the hairdresser.
Do bring a photograph of the result you have in mind. Nothing settles more quickly whether we are talking about the same amount of hair.
